Imagine knowing how to ride during a workout or interval and translating those efforts into race day performance. If that sounds intriguing, then a power meter is a training tool you’ll want to own and use.
What is a power meter?
A power meter is a device fitted to a bike that measures the power output of the rider. It uses the strain gauges that deflect when force – your pedaling – is applied. By measuring the torque and combining it with the velocity, the power – in watts – is calculated. A power meter is the best tool to quantify your workouts if you want to get the most out of your trainings.
Now you know what a power meter is, now let me tell you why you should train with one:
1. Accuracy
The power meter measures watts which are a much more accurate way to measure the effort of your workout compared to heart rate. The watts measurement shows the actual workload your body is putting out compared to heart rate, which is measure of your body’s response to the workload. Watts also instantly responds to an increase or decrease of effort as compared to heart rate, which takes time to respond.
2. Knowing Your Strengths and Weaknesses
The power meter will actually help you understand your individual strengths and weaknesses as a cyclist. You will want to do an FTP (functional threshold power) test in order to determine your power zones. The data you receive from your power meter can also help you create workouts to address your weaknesses.
3. Race Day Training
When training for an event, you will want to prepare for the specific course demands on race day. To do so, your workouts must be very precise to mimic the race to be successful. Without the use of a power meter, predicting goal race times can be near impossible. However, a power meter enables you to enter race day prepared with an accurate goal for the event. This new and improved goal setting technique allows you to reflect on each race and make adjustments for the next one if necessary.
4. Improve Training Efficiency and Quality
With the help of the power meter, you’re able to maximize your training time to focus on high quality sessions and reap the greatest gains. This way you can spend more quality time with your family, friends, and other obligations instead of all your time training.
