When it’s time to jump in the water for the swim portion of your triathlon, it’s important to be both physically and mentally prepared. While it’s most important to have necessary training logged it’s also helpful to have proper gear that will allow you to have your best swim possible. Other than your swim goggles, having a properly fitting wetsuit in an open water swim is your key to a comfortable swim.

So how do you determine what the best wetsuit is for your needs?

Take a look at these 5 key things to consider when investing in a wetsuit:

1. Cost

As with any gear you’re investing in, the first thing to think about is budget. Can you afford to invest in a top-of-the-line wetsuit or are you looking for a more budget friendly wetsuit for your swim? The price range of triathlon wetsuits varies significantly. You could spend anywhere from $50 to $900.

2. Material Thickness

Wetsuit material, most commonly closed cell neoprene, has a thickness range from 1mm to 5mm (5mm is typically the maximum thickness allowed in competitions). There is some stretchability throughout wetsuits and you’ll find the thinner, most-flexible material is around your shoulders and arms for fast, easy movement.

3. Short/Long Sleeve

Triathlon wetsuits come in different styles, including sleeveless or long-sleeve. A sleeveless wetsuit is best for warmer water temps and for those who feel too much restriction in the shoulders with a sleeved suit. Full-sleeved suits are more appropriate for colder water. It’s important to swim with the correct wetsuit so you don’t find yourself under heating or overheating.

4. Size

The sizing of a triathlon wetsuit can greatly vary so it’s highly recommended to shop where you can try on and be sure you’re buying the wetsuit type to fit your body – they come in both men’s and women’s fits. Don’t rely on a size chart when it comes time to pull the trigger on a wetsuit unless you have the option to easily return or exchange for the correct size.

5. Ease-Of-Zip

When it’s time to zip and unzip your wetsuit for race day, you want to be familiar with putting it on and off and exactly how it feels when you’re swimming. When you’re searching for the perfect triathlon wetsuit, play around with the zipper to see if it fits your needs and is easy to take on and off so you’re not scrambling on race day.

How you finish in the first leg of your triathlon can affect the rest of your performance. If you’re shooting for a flawless start, you’ll need to invest in a wetsuit that not only fits you well but would also help you swim faster and more efficiently while keeping you comfortable. Try to look for the perfect fitting wetsuit made with quality material that’s within your budget and easy to take on and off.
