Once you find the perfect pair of running shoes that fit your needs, it’s hard to imagine replacing them. Just like tires on a vehicle, your running shoes need to be replaced when they’ve gone past their maximum use. For the safety of your entire body, it’s important to know when it’s time to trade in your old faithfuls for a new, shiny pair of running shoes. If your favorite pair of running shoes are physically showing wear and you’re feeling a lack of foot support when running, it may be time to invest in a new pair of running shoes.

Take a look at these top tips to know when you should replace your running shoes:

1. Visible Wear

If you can physically see significant wear on the bottom of your running shoes are holes are starting, it’s time to replace your running shoes.

2. Every 300-500 Miles / Every 4-6 Months

For someone who runs on average 20 miles per week, they would want to replace their running shoes every 4 to 6 weeks. If you’re not running that much or perhaps running more, you want to keep a general log of your miles and invest in new running shoes between 300 and 500 miles on the sneakers, depending on wear and comfort.

3. Pain When Running

After you break in a new pair of running shoes, they should flawlessly fit your feet when working out. If you notice your once comfortable running shoes are now causing discomfort when working out, it’s probably time to invest in a new pair or running shoes.

4. Poor Shock Absorption

Another sign it’s time to replace your running shoes is when you start noticing a lack of support or perhaps a bit of knee pain during or after your run. Your running shoes should be providing support and shock absorption and if they are no longer do so, it may be time to retire your current pair of running shoes.

5. When A New Pair Feel Better

We all have that pair of running shoes that fit like a glove. They’re comfortable and have been with us through countless training and race miles. However, if you try running in a newer pair of shoes and they provide you with more comfort and performance, it is a good time to swap out the old running shoes for the new, fresh pair.

Whether you’re starting to feel a lack of support in your current pair of running shoes or you’ve logged over 500 miles, there are numerous ways to tell it’s time to invest in a new pair. Ultimately, if you think your running shoes have reached the end of their time, simply try a new pair of sneakers. If the new pair of running shoes feel good and provide you with what you need to successfully log miles, swap out the old pair for the new.
